Big Sigatoka shop on day one or two (weekday or Saturday, most things shut Sunday). Stretch the huge breakfast buffet, run room snacks and fruit from the market, eat most dinners on the Sunset Strip, use Kids Eat Free for the under 13s whenever you do eat in, hire one van and driver for a full day of sights, and pick one splurge activity. Done well, that is comfortably four figures saved over a week versus defaulting to resort pricing.

Taxis are cheap and everywhere. Licensed taxis carry LT number plates; outside town boundaries meters often are not used, so agree the fare before you get in. Hailing on Queens Road is usually cheaper than booking through the resort desk. For bigger families and groups, ask for a van and negotiate a half or full day rate, typically far better value than per-person tours.

One negotiated van-and-driver day beats three separate tours. A driver will happily run the loop of Sand Dunes early, Sigatoka market and supermarket shop, lunch at a curry house, then Tavuni Hill Fort or Biausevu waterfall, and wait at each stop. Agree the day rate and the stops up front, and budget roughly FJ$150 to 250 for the vehicle depending on distance.

Benchmark: Strip mains run FJ$15 to 30 versus FJ$40 to 60+ inside the resort, and town curries come in under FJ$20. With a few kids that gap compounds every single night. Weigh it against Kids Eat Free though: some nights a shared resort pizza plus a couple of free kids' meals beats paying for everyone outside. Do the maths per dinner, not on principle. And note the Strip's quirks: Crab Shack shuts Tuesdays, Beach Bar & Grill shuts Mondays and only does dinner, Cafe Planet is daytime only.
The Sigatoka Valley is Fiji's "Salad Bowl", so the town market is cheaper than almost anywhere in the country. Most supermarkets and the market close or run limited hours on Sundays, so do the big shop on a weekday or Saturday morning. Names link to Google Maps.

Cereal and milk, crackers and cheese, biscuits, juice boxes, snacks, market fruit, a bakery loaf and butter, and your beer and wine from B L Naidu (cheapest per recent reviews) or the Shop & Save liquor store. Between that and the duty-free allowance grabbed at Nadi airport on arrival, the minifridge becomes your second restaurant.
Unlike the food and shopping, don't limit days out to the neighbourhood. The Coral Coast sits mid-island, so everything from Pacific Harbour in the east to Nadi and the Mamanuca islands in the west is a doable day trip. Local picks first, then further afield. 14 min drive, visitor centre on Queens Road, daily 8am-4:30pm
Fiji's first national park and a 3,000 year old archaeological landscape. Recent hikers report the "two hour" ridge loop takes fitter groups closer to 80 minutes, the views from the top are superb, and there are taps and showers to de-sand afterwards. Go early, carry water; the fruit bats in the mahogany forest are a bonus.

Wildlife park and fun park in one: iguana and snake holding, hawksbill turtle feeding (11am, 1pm, 3:30pm) and the 110 metre Splash Mountain jungle waterslide that recent kids rode a dozen times. Recent heads-up: value complaints are getting louder; one July visitor called FJ$135 a head for entry plus two zipline turns and the slide "borderline scam" territory. Book the cheaper online tickets, skip the zipline, and treat it as a half day.

The region's flagship and one of the highest-rated experiences in Fiji: jet boat upriver, kava ceremony with a village chief and a home-cooked Fijian lunch. Recent reviews are borderline euphoric, singling out guides by name and calling it the best tour they have ever done, including families with young kids. The same crew runs the Off-Road Cave Safari to Naihehe Cave if the teens want the 4WD-and-cannibal-cave version instead.

Electric-assisted railbikes on the old sugarcane line, ending with a swim at a secluded beach with fresh fruit served. Recent groups spanning ages 8 to 70 all managed it easily and the guides (Britney gets repeat shout-outs) are half the fun. Books out fast; reserve before you fly.

Fiji's first glassblowing studio. Families with school-aged kids rave about making their own pieces with patient, safety-first tutors. Plan around it: weekday-only hours, and one recent visit found no blowing on due to material shortages, so ring +679 909 3200 to confirm before walking down.
Upper Sigatoka Valley, about 15 min. Mon-Sat, closed Sunday
Historic hilltop fort with river views and a genuinely gripping cannibal-era history, killing stone included, which the teens will retell for weeks. Recent visitors praise guide Naomi and call the fee worth every cent.
About 35 min west
Fiji's best mainland swimming beach: white sand, calm water at the sheltered end, horse rides. Recent tips: park by the Yatule sign then walk left in front of the hotel for the quiet sandbar end away from the keenest sellers, and expect some litter near the river mouth. Pack lunch and agree prices for braids or horse rides before saying yes.
Korolevu, about 25 min east, then a 30 min guided walk
Village-run waterfall walk with a swimming hole the teens can jump into. Recent visitors report the fee has risen (quotes range FJ$25 to 50 including a guide), seven easy stream crossings each way, and a warm village welcome. Bring cash and water shoes.
Sigatoka Valley Road, about 10 min
Traditional hand pottery demonstrations with singing, a kava welcome and genuine hospitality. A long-time Fiji resident recently called it one of the best village experiences in 20 years. Donation entry, gentle on the wallet.
Saturday morning is peak
Treat the shopping trip as the activity: market, bakery, Bula shirt fittings, curry lunch, iced coffee at Cuppabula. Half a day, barely FJ$100 for the lot.

The Coral Coast's only PADI 5-star dive operator and the closest thing to a boat trip from the resort itself: the booking desk is on the Outrigger beach next to the activities office, with free transfers from Korotogo accommodation. Snorkellers ride along with the divers to reefs minutes offshore, snorkel days at Yanuca Island, and Beqa Lagoon trips without the Pacific Harbour drive. Kids 11 and up can do the PADI Junior Open Water, free try-dive pool lessons run daily except Sunday, and recent families rave about the crew by name.
The Korotogo lagoon is tidal fringing reef, so there's no marina and no big-boat island trips from the doorstep; boats work the reef channels around the tides instead. Anything Mamanuca or Malamala still sails from Denarau, though Malamala runs coach connections from Coral Coast resorts so you can do it without driving yourself. Recent heads-up: it's pricey (adults pay near full price even to supervise), the inflatables get hot underfoot and some splash pools run grubby, so book the cheaper online tickets, take reef shoes and pair it with a Denarau day rather than driving over just for it.
Malamala Island, 25 min boat from Port Denarau. Daily 9:30am-6pm
A whole island run as a day club: infinity pools, hammocks, kayaks and world-class snorkelling straight off the pier that small kids can start from the shallows. Recent families call it the day of their trip, with easy food and plenty of shade. Cabanas book out, so reserve early, and treat it as a full day with the drive plus boat on each end.

Kula Wild's turtle feeding (11am, 1pm, 3:30pm) and Splash Mountain waterslide; the free Little Riggers kids club (ages 3 to 7) and Beach Riggers (8 to 12) at the resort; Lawai Pottery Village's gentle hands-on demonstrations; Robinson Crusoe Island's crab races and fire show; the Sabeto mud pools (ridiculous fun at any age, pack old bathers); and the beach at Crab Shack, where the little ones play on the sand while dinner cooks. A 53 year old and their 20 year old son recently rated it the trip highlight; it is a long 12 hour day door to door.

The Fiji Museum's full-size voyaging canoe and indenture-era exhibits are genuinely excellent per recent visitors, with a good lunch spot overlooking Thurston Gardens. Only worth it on a longer stay or a rainy day, but the express bus makes it a cheap adventure with older kids.

Full day on a picture-postcard island with snorkelling, lunch and water toys, the "postcard Fiji" the Coral Coast beaches can't quite match. Multiple operators run from Denarau; book transport early as it's a long day with the drive on each end.

Take water and a hat, and time it with the Natadola Beach day so the non-golfers are sorted.

Peter Thomson-designed 9-hole executive course (par 31) at the Shangri-La, open to outside players. The quick, low-pressure round: ideal for taking the teens out or squeezing in nine before dinner, and it pairs neatly with EcoTrax just up the road at Cuvu.

One round at Natadola Bay on beach day is the play: drop the family at the Natadola sandbar with a packed lunch, play 18 next door, then regroup for a late swim. World-class golf without burning a family day, and the Shangri-La nine covers any spare afternoon closer to home.

Airalo (airalo.com) is an app and website that sells eSIMs: digital SIM cards you install over the internet instead of swapping a physical chip. You buy a prepaid data pack for the country you're visiting, it installs onto your phone in minutes, and it connects to a local Fijian network when you land. Your normal Australian SIM stays in the phone untouched, so you keep your own number for calls and texts while the Airalo eSIM quietly handles the data. Plans are prepaid data packs, typically a fraction of what Telstra or Optus roaming costs, and you top up in the app if you run low.
Cheapest workable setup for a family: Airalo eSIMs for the adults and older teens, hotspot for the younger kids at the beach, and let everyone ride the resort's free Wi-Fi at home base. If someone's phone can't take an eSIM or the data runs hot, a cheap Vodafone or Digicel tourist SIM from the Nadi airport arrivals hall or the Market Road offices in Sigatoka is the physical-SIM fallback, and local data is famously cheap.
