How Ready Are You for Your Next Multi-Day Hike?
Take a 2-minute quiz and get a personalised Hiking Readiness Report, scored across the six parts of the TRAILS framework.
- Detailed insight into your fitness, navigation, gear, safety, planning and nutrition.
- Identify your real strengths and the gaps that quietly cost people good trips.
- A final check before you lock in a route, food plan and gear list for tracks like the Overland Track, Larapinta or the Tour du Mont Blanc.
Used by hikers at every stage, from first multi-day trip to seasoned trekkers tuning up before a big walk.
What the hiking readiness quiz measures
Most multi-day trips do not come unstuck because of one big mistake. They come unstuck because one part of the preparation was weaker than the rest. The quiz scores your answers across six areas, the TRAILS framework I use when planning my own treks, so you can see which part is holding you back before you commit to a route.
Training
How well your fitness holds up carrying a loaded pack on back-to-back days, not just one strong day out. Day three is where most trips get decided.
Route
Navigation and route choice: reading a topographic map, taking a bearing, and knowing what to do when cloud drops in and the phone battery dies.
Appropriate Gear
Whether your pack, sleep system, layers and water treatment suit the conditions you are walking into, and whether every item is earning its weight.
Intake
Food and water: calories per day, snacks that actually get eaten, and how you ration water across several days without carrying more than you need.
Logistics
Weather checks, permits and access, transport at both ends, and a realistic day-by-day plan with distances and timings you can hold.
Safety
First aid, emergency communication, trip intentions left with someone, and knowing your turn-around points before you need them.
How the quiz works
- 1. Answer 12 questions. Plain questions about your training, navigation, gear, food, planning and safety habits. It takes about two minutes.
- 2. Get a score for each area. You see a readiness level for all six TRAILS categories, so strengths and gaps are side by side rather than buried in a single number.
- 3. Fix the weakest link first. Your report explains what your lowest score means in practice and the one change that will make the biggest difference on your next walk.
Who it is for
It suits anyone planning a first multi-day hike and wondering what they have missed, and experienced trekkers doing a final check before a bigger walk such as the Overland Track, the Larapinta Trail or the Tour du Mont Blanc. There is no pass or fail, just a clear picture of where you stand right now.
