I’ve had a passion for hiking for more than 34 years.
As a kid, I was never much good at sport… but I loved being out in the wilderness. Hiking gave me freedom, challenge, and adventure.
But I quickly learned that multi-day hikes are unforgiving teachers.

At first, I made plenty of mistakes. Trips planned on a whim. Packs overloaded “just in case.” Sometimes it worked, sometimes it nearly didn’t.
I’ll never forget one trip during my uni days. I’d invited a group, mainly of novices, out for a 3-night trek. We didn’t have a system. I’d just said, “Want to come?” and off we went.
At one point, while I was giving instructions to part of the group as others walked ahead. In the confusion, one pack went tumbling off the side of a mountain…. gone forever.
Thankfully everyone was fine, but it was a wake-up call. I realised that when you’re leading people in the wilderness, you can’t rely on luck. You need structure, clear communication, and systems in place to keep everyone safe and confident.
That’s when I began building a system. One that let me prepare for a trip quickly and confidently.

Over the years, that system became essential. I kept taking novice friends on challenging multi-day treks and they relied on me not just for navigation, but for their safety and enjoyment. I had to get it right every time.
Later, working as a professional guide on Tasmania’s world renowned Overland Track, the system was tested even more. Day after day, week after week, I refined it:
