A Simple Trip Plan That Keeps Your Loved Ones at Ease

In 2014, I finished an 8-day hike in Tasmania, turned my phone on, and found a wall of missed calls.
For some unknown reason, t he local lodge owner had raised the alarm. Next thing, the Police were at my wife’s door. Search & Rescue was already spinning up.
The only thing that stopped a full-scale emergency?
A single trip plan document my wife had on hand.
It had our route, exit date, alternate tracks, group details, and even satellite check-ins. Clear enough that the police immediately stood down the call.
That’s why I never head into the bush without a trip plan. And that’s why I’m giving you mine, free.
What You’ll Get
The Trip Plan Template — a clean, editable itinerary you can copy and fill out in 5–10 minutes.
It includes space for:
-
Entry and exit points
-
Campsites and possible bail-out routes
-
Group members + emergency contacts
-
Permit info and logistics
-
Check-in times and communication methods
-
GPX links and map layers
Why it works: it keeps everyone on the same page. Your family, local contacts, even police or park rangers if things ever go sideways.
Who It’s For
This template is perfect if you:
-
Are new to hiking and just want peace of mind
-
Lead group trips and need everyone clear on logistics
-
Explore remote or off-track routes
-
Want to keep partners or parents reassured without endless phone calls
How It Works
1. Fill it out: jot down your route, group, and key details
2. Add links: parking pin, GPX files, or gear lists (optional)
3. Share it: send to at least three people. Someone at home, someone local, and a backup
That’s it. A small step before you leave. A huge help if things don’t go as planned.
Is this overkill for a weekend walk?
What if my plans change?
Do I need to be techy?
What if I’m just hiking locally or on well-marked trails?
