My friend asked me what puffy jacket I would recommend.
Here we go:
Synthetic or down? I prefer synthetic for hiking. It's better in the wet and will continue to provide insulation. I hike a lot in the wet, so it's what I prefer. I do have down jackets but don't tend to take them hiking these days.

Arcteryx Atom LT
Love this Jacket. I've had one for around 7 years and i wear it all the time. Great for around town as well as on the trail.
Arcteryx Nuclei
My new favourite hiking insulating jacket. Not so great for vigorous activity as i find it holds the sweat but great at keeping you warm when you need it.
Budget Option
Decathlon Trek 100
Reviews well. Yet to try, but looks like a great budget option.
Down Options
Montbell plasma 1000.
Dan Becker's favourite Jacket. I have Montbell gear but not this jacket. I would look at this one closely if in the market for a premium jacket made of down.
Arcteryx Cerium LT
My go to down jacket for the past 8 years. Still going strong and a great down jacket.
Budget option:
Decathlon MT 100.
Decathlon hasn’t been in Aus too long and every review is awesome. I am going to do a full budget kit soon and do a walk and Decathlon will feature heavily. I am going to get a MT 100 this winter. Looks like a great down jacket for AUD$109
