What is in the guide
- All six days, one at a time. Distance, ascent, realistic times, and what each day actually feels like.
- The side trips worth your legs. Cradle Mountain, Barn Bluff, Mount Ossa, Mount Pelion East and Mount Oakleigh, with return distance, climb and time for each.
- The gear I carry, with two worked pack lists you can copy, one for summer and one for winter.
- Food and meals. How I mix homemade dehydrated meals with ready-made ones, and why cooking on the track is just boiling water.
- Booking, fees, the Lake St Clair ferry and how to get home.
- Where phone reception actually works, and what to carry when it does not.
Who this is for

Who wrote it
I'm Mowser. I have walked the Overland Track more than 50 times and guided over 500 people through it, across 35 years of hiking in Tasmania. For my money it is one of the best all-round walks you will find. It has the lot: mountain peaks, open plains, rainforest and waterfalls, the highest peak in Tasmania, and a finish on the shore of the deepest lake in Australia.
These days I put out a hiking video every week and write a weekly newsletter for people planning their own multi-day walks. This is the guide I hand every person who asks me about the Overland Track, and I get asked a lot.
Everything in it comes from my own trips, not from a brochure.
